Along Came a Spider

DVD Review by Yanman

"They say that when I die, the case will die. They say it'll be like a book I close. But the book it will never close."

Morgan Freeman stars as detective Alex Cross, a role he first played in the movie Kiss the Girls. This is not a sequel though it stands on its own; it is more like a chapter in the life of the character (not unlike the long running James Bond series), and is based on a Novel by the same writer (James Patterson). Many have said that if you liked Kiss the Girls that you'll appreciate Along Came a Spider, but we think this one is even better. Even if you have never see the its predecessor, if you like mysteries, action, intrigue, and Morgan Freeman then this one should be on your list.

When a senator's young daughter Megan Rose is kidnapped, it is the secret service team that appears to have fallen down on the job. Special agent Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter), the agent personal assigned to protect the child of course feels the most responsible and is willing to do anything to find the man responsible for the abduction Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott). When for unknown reasons the kidnapper contacts the now recently retired detective and well-respected criminal profiler Alex Cross (Freeman), the secret service has no choice but to let him help track this criminal mastermind. Can they find the girl in time, worse yet will she be a live if and when they do?

Presented in anamorphic widescreen at a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the video here ranks just above average. While grain is clearly visible in some of the darker scenes, and dirt/white dots can be easily be found if one cares to look for it, the fact is that none of this things distract for the overall enjoyment of this great DVD. Soundtracks are starting to get a bad rap here at Yanman.com; the fact is that no matter how good a 5.1 soundtrack is offered if it is not offered in more then one format then it can't get our highest rating. But fear not the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack that is offered is still very, very good.

A rather slim offering of extras here or should I say extra, only a behind-the-scenes featurette stands out as a true "special feature". Are there more extras out there to be had? I guess we will never know.

More then just a mystery, Along Came a Spider is a thriller and an action film as well. Think you have everything figured out? Think again, this one will keep you guessing right up to the very end. Who knows maybe Alex Cross could have even solved the Lindbergh baby kidnapping…
