Bamboozled

DVD Review by Yanman

To be honest, the only other Spike Lee film that I had seen prior to Bamboozled was Son of Sam. Son of Sam however, was not your typical Lee film, and did not have a racially motivated plot. Bamboozled is extremely race motivated, in a way that will definitely make any intelligent person stop and think about how he treats his or her fellow man. Just be forewarned that if you are not interested in exploring these feelings within yourself you may not be interested in this movie. The DVD video, audio, and extras do not live up to the high standards set by other New Line Platinum Series DVD's, but are good enough for this type of film.

When an African-American television writer (Damon Wayans) is accused of not being in touch with his "blackness" by his Caucasian boss, he is more then just upset, he is pissed off. He decided that the best revenge would be pushing the envelope and bringing back black-faced actors in a "New Millennium Minstrel Show". With the help of his young assistant (Jada Pinkett-Smith), a dancer (Savion Glover), and a street con-artist (Tommy Davidson), he sets his plan to bring down the network. What he wasn't ready for however, was audience reactions bad or good. What follows will both amaze as well as shock you.

As mentioned above the video here does leave a bit to be desired. There is a lot of film grain and artifacting throughout this anamorphic widescreen picture. Try to ignore it and concentrate on the movie. While the 5.1 soundtrack is not distracting, it is also nothing special. For the most part it just is what it is, there. Extras are limited, but do include a feature-length commentary by Spike Lee, deleted scenes, and a making of documentary.

While I could hardly be referred to as a Spike Lee "fan", but I must respect his vision as a director/writer and his tenacity at following this dream from conception to film. Some people may be offended; others may just not get it, this can happen when you get on the bleeding edge of creativity. All I can say is that if you watch it with an open mind, you more then likely will get something out of it. Don't let yourself get bamboozled…
