Dinosaur - 2-Disc Collector's Edition

DVD Review by Yanman

"I believe you left a wake-up call for the dawn of time."

When it comes to the best available picture on DVD today a direct digital transfer is the best that you can get. Until regular "filmmaking" catches up, the only way to get this high quality digital image is from computer-generated animation. Dinosaur is another fine example of a digital-to-digital DVD from Disney, just adding to the collection of perfect or near perfect video quality DVDs like A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Fantasia 2000. Add to this a choice of audio, over 25 different extras on a two-disc set, and a story for the whole family, and you have a demo quality DVD that you can be proud of.

The story told in Dinosaur, will seem familiar enough to most, because it has been told many a time before. A child from one species is taken in by another and raised as if it was part of the group. This "new member" of the group, grows to be a leader, but still seeks something more, trying to find a place to fit in.

In this movie, the outcast is Aladar and is found as an egg and raised by a bunch of Lemurs. While he has always known that he didn't fit in with his new found "family", he happily accepts his fate. Accepts it that is until the unthinkable happens, he and his family's world is destroyed by a meteor shower.

With no home, little hope and only a few survivors, Aladar must try to lead his group to a new place to live. But where is that? Joining with a larger group of fellow survivors on a quest for the greener pastures of the mating grounds. It is a long hard journey that only the strongest will complete. Are you tough enough to make the trip?

While the video quality hear does get one of our highest ratings by far, there are still one or two places in the backgrounds (Which were shot in real locations, using traditional filming methods), where you can see very minor grain. This only keeps this one from getting our five star "plus", rating that other top Digital to Digital DVD have received, it still gets a top rating at five stars. Anamorphic Widescreen at 1.85:1 with a layer change at 53:17.

Not only does it take high quality 5.1 Digital Sound (which this disc has), to get top ratings on our scale these days, but it also takes choices. So if you are a Dolby Digital 5.1 fan, or firmly in the DTS camp, this soundtrack will not disappoint you. As is often the case the DTS soundtrack here does appear to offer deeper bass then its Dolby Digital counterpart, but other then that appear to be mostly equal.

When it comes to extras, two disc sets have always been king, setting the bar completely out of reach of their single disc competitors. The collector's edition of Dinosaur is no exception, with over 25 different extras and "Easter eggs". To list just a few …Directors' commentary, Producer's commentary, isolated sound effects track, dinosaur design featurette, story reel, and much, much, more.

If you are looking for a completely new story, then you will more then likely be disappointed by Dinosaur, because this story has been done before. If however you are looking for an innovative approach to animation, great sound, incredible video, and abundant extras, all with that familiar story on one fully packed DVD, then you don't have to look any further. Go out and by the Dinosaur 2-Disc Collector's Edition DVD, NOW, before it become extinct …
