"We want to become humans, not eat them for dinner." Vampire movies have been made and remade time and time again. Of all the different plots and twists in these movies however, one that we have never seen before is offered here; a small boy (Jonathan Lipnicki of Jerry Maguire fame) befriends a "good" vampire. While children over a certain age may find this one a bit childish, the whole family will find something here to enjoy. Also it is worth noting that this one is purely a comedy and only the meekest of children will get any kind of fright. When Tony Thompson (Lipnicki) and his family move to Scotland, he has to deal with a new country, a new school, and worst of all for a boy his age, having no friends. So his parents think that he is only looking for attention when he starts having bad dreams about vampires and their happenings. When his dreams materializes as a young vampire named Rudolph (Rollo Weeks) he may be just a little scared, but he is more fascinated with this new "friend". After saving each other's lives and being reassured that Rudolph doesn't want to bite him, the two become the closest of friends. But aside from the obvious problems with a creature of the night and a human boy being friends, Rudolph has another problem to deal with. The vampires are on the run from a hunter and they only have a few nights to find a lost amulet if they are to break their curse and get what they want the most in life, to become human again. Can Tony help his newfound friends in their quest? Offered in either an anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 or in a fullscreen version, the video quality is very good. One or two of the darkest scenes though are hampered by artifacting and grain; one scene that really stands out with artifacting is the first flying scene as our two heroes fly over a castle. With that one caveat out of the way however, most will find the video better then average. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio here is very full offering crisp clean sound from every direction and clear easy to understand vocals. Extras here are limited to only a handful of really fun things for kids like silly jokes and spooky recipes. While more is always better when it comes to extras at least the ones that are here are not the same old tired ones you see over and over again. Lets face it kids love monsters and monster movies. Even if a child has never seen some of the classic movies about these villains they know the names, Frankenstein, wolfman and of course the vampire. So if your have a child that likes these creatures, then why not pick a movie that won't give them nightmares and is fun for the whole family to watch. Unless however … one of your family members… happens to be a cow …
