Memento

DVD Review by Yanman

"I have this condition I have no short-term memory. I can't make new memories. Everything fades."

What would you do if somebody killed your wife? Before you answer, you do have one another small problem to deal with, you see during the attack that killed your wife, you obtained a head trauma that makes it impossible to make new memories. You have no short-term memory. That is the problem facing Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), and yet he is still tying to find his wife's killer. Presented in short segments that are in reverse chorological order, this one is very hard to follow. Don't let that fact deter you though; this is just one more reason for you to watch this one over and over again, and you will want to. We have seen this one, either in whole or in part over four times, and we are still looking forward to watching again. If you like a movie that you have to think long and hard about, or just love a good revenge thriller make yourself a note, buy Memento on DVD.

When insurance investigator Leonard Shelby's wife (CSI's Jorja Fox) is brutal raped and murdered, Leonard swore to avenge her death. He didn't count on one problem however, during the attack he suffers a blow to the head and ends up with severe brain damage. This damage causes a condition called anterograde-amnesia, causes Leonard to not be able to form new memories. It is hard enough to know who your friends are, or your enemies are for that matter, when you can remember what they just said, no less when you can't. Follow Leonard as he interacts with the same total strangers again and again. Strangers like Lenny (Joe Pantoliano) or the just as sexy every time you meet her Natalie (The Matrix's Carrie-Anne Moss). Who can you trust when you can't trust your own memory? No one!

Some DVD's are in our collection purely for their great picture and their awesome sound; Memento isn't one of them. While the anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 picture is adequate, it is nothing special. And the 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack is unquestionably understated. No what makes this DVD a keeper is the move, not the sound, the video or even …

…the extras. Again while there are a few extras here, like a interview with the director, a map of the lead characters tattoos, and a look at some of the clues from the films web site, the extras the we hoped for here are missing. What extras would we have liked to see here? How about a director's commentary, a plot overview, storyboards, deleted scenes, or even a script would be nice.

Memento is certainly a keeper DVD, to spite the issues pointed out above, because the film is incredibly unique. Because of the way the film is laid out, you will find yourself watching this on again and again. Because no matter how good your memory is, you're still going to miss something the first time around. Remember Sammy Jankins?
