DVD Review by Yanman

"Rescue the damsel in distress, kill the bad guy, save the world."

A Collector's Edition DVD of the 1999 blockbuster The Mummy was reviewed on this site before. So why a new review now? Well, universal has decided that in honor of the upcoming sequel, The Mummy Returns, to release a new Ultimate Edition of this movie on DVD. So what's new? What's better? What's changed here? All these questions and more will be answered in this new review. If you want to know what we thought of the movie however, you will have to read our original review, posted here.

How do you make a great DVD better? Well first rather then offering two different versions (Widescreen and full-screen) in two different packages, why not offer them together in one. So that's just what was done here each of the two discs offers a different view of this one, so compare if you want the difference between widescreen and Pan and Scan and then decide which one you like better.

Next stop the soundtrack. When this movie first hit DVD Dolby Digital 5.1 was the only way to go, with DTS just hitting the market. Well times have changed and to get the best audio ratings on our scale you have to offer the viewer a choice of either DTS or Dolby Digital. The Ultimate Edition scores big here as well, adding a superb DTS mix to the already highly rated Dolby version.

In order to really be called an "Ultimate" Edition you gotta have extras, a BUNCH of extras. There are almost too many extras here to count, with three commentaries, a Documentary, deleted scenes, visual effects and much, much more. In addition to these extras, there are Highlights on the upcoming sequel The Mummy Returns and a trailer for the same. If it is raining some Sunday and you have nothing better to do, you just might be able to get though all the extras in one sitting, maybe.

If you don't already have a copy of The Mummy DVD in your collection, then there is no question that you should add this edition to your collection. If however you already own the Collector's Edition you'll have a tough decision to make, whether to keep it or replace to with this Ultimate two disc set. Let us help you, if you are a fan of this film and a DVD collector, find a friend to give the first disc to and rush out and purchase The Mummy Ultimate Edition today, before the plagues get ya
