“You know what, maybe there’s a good reason donkeys shouldn’t talk.” From the team that brought you Antz, PDI/DreamWorks, comes the fascinating and funny Shrek. As the most successful summer 2001 box-office smash, Shrek earned over 200-million-dollars. What makes this film one that everyone wants to see again and again? Well it is a great story, and it is very fun and funny, but it is the voice cast Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow that makes this one what it is. While you will marvel at the animation, get engulfed in the sound, and have fun with the extras, it is the apparent camaraderie of the cast that comes through as the most entertaining part of this DVD. It is hard to believe then that none of these stars ever shared the same recording studio while making of this film. Shrek is fun to watch and will find its way into your player time and time again. Shrek (Mike Myers) is a big ugly ogre that only wants one thing, to be lets alone in his swamp. He does everything in his power to ensure this is the case, from plunder and pillage to spit and scream. An evil monarch, Lord Farquaad (voiced by John Lithgow), puts a wrench in these plans when he sends all the fairy tail creatures into the swamp, including a talking Donkey (Eddie Murphy). Unable to deal with the new neighbors, Shrek and Donkey set out to ask Lord Farquaad to remove these creatures from the now over crowded swamp. Farquaad agrees, with one major caveat, Shrek must commit to completing a quest to rescue the feisty yet beautiful Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz). Can the dynamic duo rescue the princess from the fire-breathing-dragon, and get her back to the kingdom? Better yet can Shrek get there without falling in love? This two-disc set offers a number of different audio and video choices. Disc one is offered in a full-frames aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and has a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Disc two is offered in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, and adds a DTS 5.1 surround soundtrack. Whatever video option you choose you will not be disappointed. Like most computer generated animation, Shrek’s digital transfer to DVD makes the video quality flawless. Like DTS better then Dolby Digital or visa versa? Again the choice is yours, and either way you can’t go wrong with this great soundtrack. There are a ton of unique extras here including a DVD first where you have the ability to record your own voiceovers and star in one of 12 separate scenes (DVD-ROM required). Other extras include a feature-length commentary, behind-the-scenes featurette, hidden fun-facts, character interviews, games, music videos, and much, much more! Looking for a complaint? Ok, here’s a minor one, the extras are spread across both discs, so whatever version you prefer to watch you need both discs to get all the extras. Can you think of a better reason to get a multi-disc player though? If you liked Shrek at the movies, then you’ll love Shrek on DVD it’s bigger, better, and even greener (ok I made that last part up). If you are one of the few that haven’t seen this one yet, then rush out now to get it. Because no one will ever be able to get enough of this big, Scottish, ogre… you can bet your Donkey on that!
