Patriotism, it has grown in this country with renewed vigor since the recent tragic terrorist events in September. Disney has assembled four stories of American heroes that it has produced over the past 50 years. This roughly one hour DVD tells the stories of such real American Legends as John Henry, Johnny Appleseed, and Casey Jones as well as the fictional legend of Paul Bunyan. With a celebrity introduction by James Earl Jones, Disney’s American Legends will have you believing that the American spirit has grown from a strong history of real heroes. Each of the four “segments” here was created at different times in Disney history from The Brave Engineer (in 1950) to John Henry (put together in 2000). Amazingly the quality seems to get better, not with the newer art work but, as things get older! The colors, the cleanliness of the lines, and even the story telling all seem best on the three shorts that originated in the 1950’s. The sound and video quality are all of a “TV” standard. Presented in the academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (As in the TV aspect ratio), the video quality is very good. The audio is also below most DVD standards with only a Dolby Digital Surround Sound soundtrack. Don’t let this stop you, stories this good don’t need bells and whistles, they stand on there own. Extras are also in limited supply, there is the original television introduction by Walt Disney of Johnny Appleseed, a learning game, and some weblinks as a DVD-ROM extra. While all Disney films are touted as “wholesome family entertainment”, rarely do many meet and exceed there goal as well as this one does, Disney’s American Legends are stories of America as told by a true American story teller. Let freedom ring…
