“People ask me, why do you do it man? They don't understand, it's about the men next to you. That's all it is.” Based on actual events. No statement has caused more controversy in the movie world. It normally means one of two things, either a completely boring story or the truth is so stretched that no one would ever guess that what was going on in the film had anything to do with the original event. Black Hawk Down is the real story of what happened in 1992 when an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force Soldiers we sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has lead to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When what is supposed be a one-hour mission goes horribly wrong, these troops are forced into a life or death battle with thousands of armed Somali citizens that lasts over 18 hours. This fast paced movie is never boring and although there is obviously some creative license taken, it still remains a faithful telling of the events as they happened. Presented in a Widescreen Version that preserves the original aspect ratio of 2.40:1, the video quality here is above average with only the darkest of scenes showing any noticeable artifacting. One note here for anyone with an “old fashion” square TV, 2.40:1 is a really wide aspect ratio, if you have a small set or don’t like widescreen, you may find yourself squinting and cursing at this one. Get ready to be surrounded by gunfire for over two hours, because the Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack does an excellent job of filling the room with the sounds of war. Looking for a complaint? Ok, here’s one – Why no DTS or 7.1 version on the soundtrack? While we could think of a large number of extras we would have liked to have seen (How about a CNN report about the actual event, or a commentary by one of the actual soldiers), the only extra here is a on the set featurette. If real life war drama is what you crave then Black Hawk Down will certainly fill that need. This is a fast paced drama that tells it like is, a no-holds-bared look at one of America’s recent skirmishes. I for one will sleep better tonight knowing that men like these are willing to fight injustices throughout the world. Leave no man behind…
