“Oh, that's great; blame it on the little guy. How original! He must've read the schedule wrong with his one eye!!” Can a movie be automatic at the box-office? More then likely not, considering the rather fickle nature of the movie going public. However, when the Studios of Disney and Pixar team up history tells us that a blockbuster film is soon to follow. Monsters Inc. flexed it muscles at the box-office and put up winning numbers to be sure. How good did it do? The numbers have it at 20th all time US and 21st worldwide. Is it the life like animation that makes these movies so good? While that plays a part, we don’t think that is it, Pixar has found the time honored formula to making a good film – it takes a great story, a good screenplay, and great actors. And while the actors only supply the voices here, make no doubt about it, it takes talented actors to play vocal only rolls. Is the DVD as good as the movie on it? This one is a five star offering all the way, sight, sound, story and extras. Don’t even look behind door number two, buy it now! How do the monsters in your children’s closet generate the electricity need to run there cities? Using your children’s screams of course. So when the one “scream team” of sully (John Goodman) and his little one-eyed buddy Mike (Billy Crystal) are on the brink of breaking the all-time-scream record, all eyes are on them. But when the unthinkable happens, a child slips through into the monster world, their focus changes from winning a contest to babysitting and returning this “little monster” to her own world. The digitally mastered direct from digital video transfer is as food as it gets. Until we have true HD DVD, these computer generated images are the best you can enjoy at home. Offered in either anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) or a “specially reformatted for standard television” full-screen version (1.33:1). Chose to watch either one they are both spectacular and you won’t miss any of the important action. Is the sound as good as the picture? Very close, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX, the only thing missing is a DTS ES version to offer a choice for those would want it. Not a major issue, but worth pointing out. If you love extras then this collector’s edition 2-disc DVD from Disney and Pixar will not disappoint you. Included are such extras as a director’s commentary an all new short “Mike’s Car” (Created Exclusively for the video and DVD), the 2001 Academy Award Winning Animated short “For The Birds”, and over a dozen more extras equaling hours of fun. Can Pixar and Disney keep up this winning streak forever? Well if the preview offered on this DVD of the forthcoming release from the team, entitled “Finding Nemo”, is any indication, this dynamic duo is poised for another grand-slam. And you can even see that if you only have “one good eye”.
