"We could find
bigger bugs to come here and fight
"
Is there any truth to the comment "If it is from Disney & Pixar its a guaranteed blockbuster?" Well for this reviewers money A Bugs Life fits that mold. Added to the simple fact that it is a good wholesome movie , this DVD version features a stunning video transfer, superb audio, and a few extras. Put this one on your list of must haves! It makes our top 10-demo list for video its video quality. Lets see how do these things start Oh yeah Once upon a time there was an ant colony located on a distant island. The ants led by there half-witted queen (Voice of Phyllis Diller) and Princess Atta (Voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus) are plagued by an interesting dilemma. You see there are these grasshoppers led by the appropriately named Hopper (Voiced by Kevin Spacey). Now hopper and his band of outlaws feel that because they are bigger and meaner that they can enslave the ants, and make them stockpile food for the grasshoppers to eat for the winter. This scheme works for years, right up until a clever (yet clumsy) ant named Flik (Voice of Dave Foley) topples this years offering and offending the grasshoppers. The colony assumes that it has no other choice but to meet Hoppers demands and work twice as hard before the rains come. Flik has a better idea, get bigger bugs to help fight off the grasshoppers. Even thought the "high council" thinks that its certain suicide, they grant Fliks request to go on a scouting mission, more just to keep him out of their way then anything else. You can only imagine their surprise when he really does return with "the meanest fighting bugs around." As is always the case however things are never what they seem, and plans are always changing. Take a good story, add some loveable characters, stir in two helpings of comedy, just a pinch of romance, and youve got the recipe for another Disney hit movie. Looking for the crispest, cleanest video available? How about an artifact free transfer? This is the first DVD created from a digital master, not from film, and it looks fantastic! A reference disc? You bet! 5+ stars for sure. Add to the spectacular video a top-notch soundtrack, not the best, but very good. Extras is where Buena Vista Home Video (Excluding their Collectors Series) normally falls short, and this disc is only a slight improvement. While it does contain a animated short, second set of credits with the real cool "mock goofs", and a choice of Wide Screen or Full Screen versions, (The full screen version was digitally recreated so that no important characters are lost off the edges, we still find this one to be a little on the light side. But you know what they say if at first you dont succeed . . . Looking for a great family film? Or maybe just something without all the shootem up car chases? If so turn off the bug zapper, put on some protective spray, because in the end it really is a bugs life!
