Absence of the Good

DVD Review by Yanman

"St. Augustine he said that evil has no embodiments, no incarnation it is simple the absence of the good."

Detective Caleb Barnes (Stephen Baldwin) is still dealing with the accidental death of his son (He was shot by another student in his grade school class) when the call comes in that there has been a murder. When one murder, turns into two, and then many, Caleb many just be in way over his head. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and an anamorphic widescreen video transfer are both about average, no extras however.

Our killer starts out by killing his victims with a quick hard whack on the back of the head, then the situation starts to get really weird. The killer has this habit of completely cleaning up the crime scene, not to cover up the crime though, just to be neat. This causes some people to start calling the killer Mister Clean, Caleb is not amused, and he thinks giving killers cute names is a sure fire way to make people stop fearing them.

Our detectives think that they have the whole thing figured out; they know whom the killer is, why he's killing and even where he'll strike next. So all they have to do is go to the next location, way for him, and the whole thing is over, right? Wrong! Like most thing in a movie of this nature, nothing is what it seems. The twists are not hard to figure out however, if you have seen enough of these. When did you figure it out?

The widescreen anamorphic 1.78:1 video looks good, but not great, nothing really to complain about nor rare either.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio falls into the same category as the one mentioned above, just so-so.

Another DVD, another non-event concerning extras, there are none. Now here is the question, do there have to be? In all the reviews, I write the thought is that there should at least be something laying around to add value to the DVD. Alternatively, maybe extras are only for special editions; let me know what you think at reviews@yanman.com

How many Baldwins are there? This is the first movie that I can remember seeing Stephen Baldwin it is hard to tell if he is acting or that is the way he is in real life. If he is acting it is a pretty good job, if he is really that dull, well you get the point. Absence of the Good may be the absence of the extras on DVD put at least it does have some plot; it may be worth a quick viewing. Oh and by the way is it just me or does the killer look like Kenny from South Park?
