Against All Odds

DVD Review by Yanman

"What is it you don't like exactly football players, tacos or beer?" " I like tacos and beer."

In this story of love and betrayal Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges star as opposites that attract and then explode. With a catchy title song that climbed the charts in 1984 and a twisted plot, Against All Odds takes us to a tropical paradise and then turns bloody. Fans of the movie will love the deleted scenes and the director's commentary.

A washed up football player Terry Brogan (Jeff Bridges) decides against his better judgment to take an assignment from an old friend, (if you can call him a friend) Jake Wise (James Wood). The mission is to find Wise's estranged girlfriend Jessie Wyler (Rachel Ward). You see, according to Jake, Jessie stabbed him in the leg (although aiming higher) and then vanished with $50,000.

But Terry didn't count on one thing when he took the task from his old friend, he didn't count on falling in love. But there is more than meets the eye when Jessie is involved, and he finds himself over his head in a complex web of dishonesty, treachery, and multiple murders.

There are some signs of compression artifacts, shimmering, and a transfer flaw or two here, but nothing that distracts too much from the enjoyment of the disc. The layer change at 1:28:26 happens at the very end of a scene and unless you know that it is a layer change you may not even notice, but if you look it is there.

The audio is Dolby Digital, but only 2-Channel Dolby Surround. A few of the musical moments and sound effects do utilize the surround speakers, certainly nothing to write home about however.

There are a good number of extras with this one including two director commentaries, two music videos, and a plethora of deleted scenes.

If you like action/murder/love stories, then jump in your Porsche and race your best friend to the DVD player because, although it may be "Against All Odds", it's the chance you'll have to take…
