American Beauty

DVD Review by Yanman

"Look Closer…"

It is hard to write a review of a movie like American Beauty, so much has been written, and so much has already been said, what could we add? Our reviews of course are always more about the DVD version of the film then about the plot. But we normally like to include a bit about the story as well. We will just say this, it is everything that has been said about it, and so much more. If you haven't seen it, run out and get the DVD now! You won't be disappointed.

Well we looked closer…to the video that is. Closer then most people will look, we are sure. We did find some negligible dirt, and one or two places where there is background "noise". These are only slight, and only the most anal (like us) will probably notice. But that's why we are here. Presented in the original widescreen aspect 2.35:1. Anamorphic.

Repeat after me, "choice is good". And a choice is exactly what you get with the soundtrack here, a choice of either DTS or Dolby Digital. What better way to solve the classic argument of which is better DTS or DD, let you ears be the judge, and go from there. For this reviewer on this DVD, I think I'd select DTS; it seems a little cleaner up front.

There are only a limited number of extras here, which will mostly only leave you asking for more. There is a short behind-the-scenes featurette, a feature length commentary by the director, and an hour-long storyboard presentation with commentary by director Sam Mendes and director of photography Conrad L. Hall. At one point during the commentary Sam mentions some "deleted scenes, that are on the DVD", um Sam, I guess these didn't make it. Is there a future "special edition" in the works?

Winner of 5 Academy Awards, including best picture for 1999, American Beauty is already a classic. It will be reviewed and compared to other movies for many years to come. If for some reason you missed this one in the theaters, DVD is the best way to see this great film. If you have already fallen in love with this movie, there is no reason not to add this disc to your collection. Just don't let your wife catch you liking it TOO much by yourself, if you know what I mean.
