“Oh, I swim pretty girl -- pretty good!” It takes three things to make to make a great animated classic, great art, great voices, and a great story. Atlantis scores big on the first two counts without question, with breathtaking widescreen animation and a cast of voice talents that are just plain fun to listen to. The only question that remains is, “How good is the story”? Well the plot is pretty clear, good vs. evil and all that, but the plot holes are still big enough to sail a sub through. Still, if watching a “fantasy animation film” means suspending belief, then suspend away for 96 minutes, and enjoy the ride. Milo (Voiced by Michael J. Fox) has a dream, the dream to find the lost continent of Atlantis. While his cohorts at the museum that he works at have no desire to help him he is determined to fulfill his uncle’s life work. With the help of his grandfather’s life long friend Preston Whitmore, he joins an intrepid band of explorers on the journey of a lifetime. Will they find Atlantis? How could they not, in a movie named Atlantis the Lost Empire. Will they return home alive to tell about it? Now that is the question. As with many of today’s animated DVDs, Atlantis is a direct digital (from the computer) to digital (DVD) transfer. This eliminates all of the problems we normally associate with film transfers (grain, dirt, and etcetera). So until we get some kind of high def transfer, this type of Anamorphic widescreen (in this case at 2.35:1) transfer, is as good as it is going to get. On the audio side, Disney has again gone the best route possible offering both DTS and Dolby Digital multi-track audio. Not sure which you like better? Try them both, then decide. Looking for a one word review for the extras here? Wow. There are over three hours of extra provided on this fabulous 2-disc set. While there are many multi-disc sets that offer many hours of extras, Disney has chosen a different approach, offering you the ability to either watch all most all the extras at once (two hours) without having to select different things off the menu or to pick and chose only the extras you want. There are too many extras to list them all here (or even on our sidebar) suffice it to say that all the extras you could ever want are here. Disney offers Atlantis up as an animated feature that is action packed, and for a change not a musical. And they do it on a DVD that does a fine job of showing of the highest end equipment, from DTS audio to progressive scan video. Animation is often watched over and over again in homes with small children, and while this one is rated PG for mild violence, we are sure that will be the case with this one as well. Kids don’t understand plots anyway. Do they? Now where did I put that map…?
