Bad Boys

DVD Review by Yanman

"Until then, until then, you are Mike Lowery, you be him, that's what you are, you're him!"

In this action-packed shoot-'em-up comedy, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith play crime fighting partners that spend almost as much time fighting each other, as they do the bad guys. Making these two the Bad Boys of law enforcement. Lawrence and Smith are witty (what would you expect) and play well off each other well, making this one fun to watch. This is an updated DVD, containing additional extras and a director's commentary.

When one hundred million dollars worth of premium grade-A heroin turns up missing from the Miami police locker, there is little doubt that it is an inside job. When the missing drugs threaten to shut down the entire narcotics division of the Miami PD, however Captain Howard knows he must put his best detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and his partner Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) on the case. Even though they executed the original large drug bust, nothing in their careers has prepared them for the case ahead of them.

It doesn't take long for the drug investigation to get ugly and deadly. The killers only one beautiful witness (Tea Leoni) to the murder of a police informant and prostitute. And when she will only trust Detective Mike Lowrey, things seem to be heading in the right direction for the police. When Mike is nowhere to be found however, it is time for his partner Marcus to play actor and become Mike for a few days. If this role is not hard enough as it is, Marcus's wife is the a very jealous and suspicious woman, and when she finds out that her husband is playing "playing house" with a beautiful single gal, Marcus has more to be afraid of then just some men with guns.

The video quality here is above average, but is nothing special. Presented in Anamorphic widescreen at an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 The 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack quality is also above average, filling the room with lots of gunfire from all directions and rumbling bass from the explosions.

This is the second time that Bad Boys has been released to DVD. The first release on August 5, 1997 was very limited, containing no extras, but considering how new DVD was at the time, there was very little on most DVDs at the time. Times as they say, have changed. Enter the Bad Boys Special Edition, with extras including a director's commentary, an isolated musical score, three music videos, a featurette, and a really cool multiple-angle piece on all of the gunfire and explosions. While this DVD does not even come close to having the most extras we have seen, it does add more bang to an old movie, for about the same buck.

Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha you gonna to do? While this can't be considered Smith's best action film, nor Lawrence's funniest, this move does have a little bit of both, great action, and hilarious comedy. Just be sure to wear your bullet-proof vest, and oh yeah, don't drive like an old lady…
