Bear in the Big Blue House – Shape of a Bear

DVD Review by Yanman

"Me, I'm the shape of a Bear"

This is our second review of a Bear in the Big Blue House DVD, our first review of Party time with Bear is also still available here on the site. This DVD (which is third in the series on DVD) focuses on many different kinds of shapes and how they fit into the world around us. We decided that to best review this DVD we should view it in the presence of its target audience, so join as reviewers from 5-33 look into the world of the big blue house.

For those that don't know Bear in the Big blue house is a series on PBS from the creative minds at Jim Henson. "Bear" the lead character is joined by Ojo, Pip and Pop, Tutter, Shadow, Luna and others as he helps to teach kids from roughly the ages of 3-6 lessons that they can use every day. From sharing and teamwork, to the shape of the world around them.

In Shape of a Bear you can have fun with Ojo, Pip and Pop in three episodes that help teach shapes in an interesting way. Join them in favorites like "Shape Explores" as they discover a wonderful world of shapes in everything they see. Or view in amazement as Tutter figures out how to get a rectangle box through a round hole. And if that isn't enough this DVD includes four great sing-along songs.

While TV videos are certainly not the best ever quality in video and sound, Bear in the Big Blues house is at least above average in both categories. With crisp clear well saturated colors and Digital 2 channel sound, parents can be quite certain that their children are experiencing their favorite show, better then ever before.

Extras are limited purely to chapter stops, including jumps to your beloved sing-along songs. One is left to wonder when the world of children's DVDs will wise-up and add some fun extras to their DVDs, making them irresistible to kids, and more of a bargain for adults.

If your children must watch TV, then at least it should be educational and fun, and for over thirty years Henson characters have done just that. Bear is no exception to this rule, and is a pleaser of children and the adults that are forced to watch alone. While bear may be the shape of a Bear…we just wish we were in the shape that we were in just 10 short years ago…
