"In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland. While shooting a documentary… A year later their footage was found." With the above paragraph opens one of the hottest and most controversial movies of the summer. The comment was made time and time again that the film cost lest than $30,000 for the independent studio to make. Cris Rock made a crack on the MTV Music awards that someone must still have $20,000 or so still in their pockets. Regardless of the low cost of the film, the premise is scary and the story is strong. Isn't that what makes a good movie after all? In the small town of Burkittsville, Maryland (Formally know as Blair) the story is told of the Blair Witch. In February Several children accuse Elly Kedward of luring them into her home to draw blood from them. Kedward is found guilty of witchcraft, banished from the village during a particularly harsh winter and presumed dead. Then every 60 years or so some strange event happens in this small town. See http://www.blairwitch.com for the complete timeline. This is the story of three film makers that head out into the woods to make a student film about the town witch. Lead by Heather Donahue, Montgomery College film students Michael Williams, Joshua Leonard get lost in the woods, but continue to film as things start to come unglued. The video here is documentary style so it is made poorly shot with hand held cameras by inexperienced cameramen. It was shot with a super8 color video camera, and a 16mm black and white in academy aspect ratio 4:3 (Full Screen). Sound is 2.0 Dolby Surround, with only the slightest amount of sound coming from the surround speakers. Still creepy though. There are some really cool extras here, and I would highly recommend watching the Sci-Fi special "The Curse of the Blair Witch" documentary even prior to watching the movie for the first time. It gives a really good history to the "back story" of the Blair Witch". If your in the mood for a different kind of scary movie, one without all that blood and guts, and with no special effects. Then get out your map and compass, stock up on power bars and get ready to search the woods looking for the Blair Witch.
