"I've got one finger, two shoulders and one brain." A psycho-thriller that attempts to enter the realm of movies like Seven, but misses it's mark, The Bone Collector does have its moments. Denzel Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme, the best NY city forensics cop alive, who has suffered an unfortunate accident rendering him a quadriplegic. He thinks he has little reason to live, that is until a serial killer starts terrorizing the city and he must team up with a rookie cop (Angelina Jolie) to stop the assassin. Lincoln Ryme is an accomplished author, a forensics expert, and a decorated police detective. While investigating a crime scene, Lincoln is trapped by falling debris, and rendered immobile, forever. As his condition deteriorates, he finds himself wishing for, and then planning his own death. All of this changes however when a rookie cop, Amelia Donaghy, finds a dead body and some intriguing clues. Lincoln likes her style of police work, and demands that she works with him, against her will. Along with, Det. Paulie Sellitto (Ed O'Neill) the police create an elite squad to work on the mystery at hand. The clues that the "team" finds at the crime scenes are obviously messages targeted toward knowledgeable investigators. But, why? Will the cops catch their killer, or will they all end up on the collector's shelf? There should be no reason to have to say this with a movie this new, but The Bone Collector's DVD video is just not up to par. There is a lot of dirt, scratches, and video transfer flaws early on, and the dark scenes are grainy and exhibit artifacting. We had hopped for more form this Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1 DVD. Choices are good! And this DVD provides two choices of high quality 5.1 Digital Surround sound. This disc offers both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 surround soundtracks, on the same disc. Assuring that whichever one of the two you prefer, your room will be filled with high quality sound and deep low bass. Extras include a Spotlight on Location Featurette, Production Notes, Trailers (Including a 5.1 version of the upcoming The Skulls), DVD-ROM Features, and a very enlightening Director's commentary with Phillip Noyce. Danzel gives a great performance as do the rest of this cast, unfortunately the script, and the DVD quality both fall short in the end, leaving you wanting for more. Still this one is worth a look, even if it is just for morbid curiosity. If you hail a cab and he has a monkey in a noose hanging from the mirror, just give him the finger and move on, or else he might just take you on the ride of your life.
