New York, Manhattan, for those of you that may not know Manhattan is an island, an island that over three million people a day must commute to and from. There are only two main ways to get to this island, by bridge or by tunnel. So if, during rush hour, skinhead jewel thieves during a high-speed chase run into a truck carrying illegal toxic waste, and there is a devastating explosion in the Holland tunnel, you can understand that it would cause quite a mess. The explosion seals both ends of the tunnel sealing in twelve diverse survivors (and a Dog), with little hope for escape. Enter, disgraced former emergency medical services Chief Kit Latura (Stallone). It seems in the recent past our hero was "let go" from EMS because he led a number of fire fighters into a burning building and a few of them didn't make it out alive. So when he offers the new chief some advice on how to deal with the current situation, the Chief say's "Thanks, but I'll do it my way." Unfortunately for our survivors, the Chief ends up getting himself killed, leaving Kit in charge of the situation due to his past experience in the job and with the tunnel. After finding a way in (no small feat) to reach the survivors, they must then fight their way thought fires, explosions, collapsing ceilings, mass flooding, and the NY city Rats to eventually get to daylight. I won't spend any more time on the plot (the writers didn't either), and I will go strait to the heart of this incredible DVD. By far the most incredible, no unbelievable, part of this disc is the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track. Not only will it get 5 stars from this reviewer, but we have also decided to give it our "recommend best buy for sound award". (The highest honor our humble site can bestow, see Top 10 DVD for the rest of the list). This is the first disc listed in our top 10-demo disc section, and the over two minute tunnel explosion will be listed as the scene to demo. One word of caution if you have neighbors with-in ear shot of your subwoofer, call them and warn them first. We have gotten reports from the web, that people have had the cops called on them because of how loud this film gets. (No lie!). The video quality on this film is second rate only to the sound, the colors are crisp and clean, when there are any. The color mostly comes from the fires and explosions, which there are quite a few of. Most of this film is very dark simply because of its subject matter. I would recommend viewing the movie in a room with little or no ambient light, in order too better view these dark scenes. On to the extras, Universal has lead the way in providing the best extras available on their DVDs and this Collector's Edition disc is no exception. Add to the director's comments (Rob Cohen) the following extras -- The making of Daylight, an overview featurette, The music video "Whenever There Is Love", and a Archive of storyboards and production photos. These extras, along with the 1 hour and 55 min movie, must completely fill this RSDL disc, the layer change comes at 59:55 and is very noticeable but not a major distraction. If you arent afraid of tunnels, drowning, tight places or really big rats, or if your ready to face those fears, warn the neighbors, crank up the sub and get ready to spend two hours in the dark looking for daylight!
