"Did someone order the fish?"

Humans have a strange fascination with the sea and the creatures that inhabit it; this extends of course to one of nature's most efficient killers, sharks. Steven Spielberg scared us the first time in 1978 with Jaws and now Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2) tries again with Deep Blue Sea. The sharks are better, meaner, and even smarter, but still look a little fake. With an unbelievably clean picture, a heart stopping soundtrack, and some extras to sink your teeth into, this DVD will not leave you high or dry.

While attempting to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease at a large offshore (and partially underwater) laboratory called Aquatica, researchers lead by Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows) genetically alter four very large Mako sharks. They enlarged the sharks brains so they had more matter to "farm", having the side effect of making sharks smarter. When one of the sharks escapes however, the project's investors gets nervous sending the richest man in the world Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) in to investigate.

The first test of the serum extracted from the largest shark, proves that the doctors plans are right on target, right on that is until the smarter sharks get too smart for their own good and systematically start to attack their captors. So, who will win the day? Russell the adventurer millionaire, Tom the shark wrangler, the good Dr., our friendly cook Preacher (LL Cool J), the bird, or maybe this time the sharks win, you'll just have to find that out for yourself.

Although the video here is crisp and artifact free, I did notice some shimmering in the grating of the steal floors and fences. The layer change located at 55:26 in the film is easy to pick out but is well positioned.

Sound from all directions, because the water comes from all directions. This 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack sounds good all the way around, but it is the bass that stands out the most, if the helicopter explosion doesn't move your sub, I don't know what will.

Take a bite out of these extras, two documentaries, star/director commentary, deleted scenes, and even more on DVD-ROM. There is one extra missing that should have been included here, and that is the LL Cool J video for Deepest Bluest.

Sometimes the scariest monsters are real, they live right here among us, that is what makes them truly scary; the fact that you could actually find yourself nose to nose with them. Now, if you will excuse me I have an appointment to head out into the ocean in a rickety old sailboat, we are going somewhere between the devil and the Deep Blue Sea…
