"People knew about the Manhattan project you know, and they kept that a secret." This month we will review two movies with a very similar story. OK the exact same story with only a few distinct twists. Those two films are Deep Impact and Armageddon. Moreover, for anyone that saw them both, the similarities will far outweigh the differences. The first to come out, both in the theater and on DVD was Deep Impact. For anyone that might have missed the theme, it's about a comet that is on a collision course with earth. During the course of investigating the suspicious circumstances of the resignation of the secretary of the Department of the Treasury, a MSNBC reporter Jenny Learner (Tea Leoni) uncovers more than she bargained for. At first, she incorrectly assumes that the secretary was having an affair. Then maybe it was the President. However, when she discovers that the "Elle" that they are talking about is really E.L.E (Extinction Level Event), she realizes she has tapped the largest story of our time. The President (Morgan Freeman), realizing that he can no longer keep the seven mile long comet (discovered initially by high school student Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood)), announces our tactical plans to the world. For eight months, we managed to work with the Russians to build a new kind of space ship to fly out to the comet and destroy it, build a tunnel that can hold a million people, and to keep the whole thing from the press. Well I guess that why they call it Science FICTION. The six astronauts, one Russian and five Americans, although officially lead by Oren Monash, is truly directed by Spurgeon "fish" Tanner (Robert Duval). Tanner was the last man to land on the moon, and has piloted six other shuttle missions, but still has to earn the respect of his young crew. Nevertheless, the question remains is respect, hard work, guts and glory enough to get this job done? Video quality is crisp and clean with no blemishes or digital artifacts noticed. The layer switch on this RSDL disc was located 58:56 into the movie and was noticeably poorly placed. Knock off an additional 1/2 point due to the lack of 16x9 enhancement. The audio quality was also top notch, with the Dolby Digital soundtrack completely filling the room during the action filled scenes. The subwoofer also gets a complete workout, especially during the explosions. Only one major complaint here and it is a menu set-up problem, the disc defaults to Dolby Pro-Logic and has to be switched into DD 5.1. Extras, what extras? Theatrical trailers no longer count as extras. So, if you like your comet movies to be a mix of action, human drama, patriotism, or if you just, love to see New York City get swept into the ocean, then get ready because this one makes a Deep Impact!
