Desert Blue

DVD Review by Yanman

"Yes indeed, the world's largest ice cream cone, right out here man desert in the desert."

This is the story of what happens when the big city girl meets a small town boy. When a young cable TV starlet Skye (Kate Hudson) and her father get "stuck" in a small town in the desert, Skye is not very at all happy to be there at first. Strange how things change in just a couple of days. This DVD presented in Anamorphic Widescreen looks good, and sounds O.K. regardless of its lack of a 5.1 mix, extras though are severely lacking.

Anyone that has traveled America's highways has undoubtedly seen the signs for some of this country's strangest attractions, the "world's largest ball of twine", "the biggest dinosaur" etc. Well, somewhere in the desert sits the fictional town of Baxter, California that holds the dubious distinction of having the world's largest ice cream cone. Skye's father (John Heard) teaches a class on this kind of tourist attractions, and is dragging his TV star daughter from town to town to photograph them.

When they arrive in Baxter to view the cone, they end up trapped because of an overturned truck filled with unknown chemicals. At first Skye is "chomping at the bit" to get out of this little nowhere town, but after meeting and then falling for Blue (Brendan Sexton), she is in much less of a hurry. Will they stay together? Will everyone die from the chemicals in the overturned truck?

The Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1 video is clean and exhibits no artifacting or flaws therefore, looks very good.

Sound is unfortunately presented in only Dolby Digital 2 Channel Surround. This movie, with its explosions, chases and other sound effects really deserved more from the soundtrack.

The extra, that's right like in the one extra, is a music video by Rilo Kelly. And is also presented in Dolby Digital 2 Channel Surround.

If you are looking for a fun teenage movie of the 90's, ala The Breakfast Club, with just a tad of the surreal, then pour yourself a glass of empire cola and look no further than the desert, the Desert Blue.
