"Fugeddaboudit…"
Based on a true story, Donnie Brasco is a gritty look into the underworld of the New York Mafia. Adapted from the book by federal agent Joseph D. Pistone Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life In the Mafia written in 1988, this is a story any "friend of mine" is sure to enjoy. Hey would we ever say anything bad about an Al Pacino movie? Fugeddaboudit… In November of 1978 FBI agent Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp), finds himself befriended by Mafia insider Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino). From this one contact Joe (now known by his undercover name of Donnie Brasco), is able to gain the trust of the entire syndicate. As he moves up the chain of command, Donnie has a hard time keeping his two lives separated. Is he a good G-man with a great wife and family, or is he Mafia Dom willing to steal and kill at his bosses' request? To go all the way, to go deeper into this dark place, to really get his man, Donnie will have to risk his marriage, his family, his job, and ultimately even his gangster mentor that he has grown to respect. Presented Anamorphic Widescreen in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The video quality is about average here, with the mostly washed out colors, and some small amounts of video dirt. Audio is presented in either Dolby Digital 5.0 or Dolby Digital 2.0. Don't look for anything to exciting here though the movie is mostly "talking heads" with little surround effect. Extras here include a director's commentary, an original featurette, and an exclusive featurette entitled "Donnie Brosco: Out of the Shadows". How many extras does it take to be called a Special Edition? Of that you will have to be the judge, because this number varies a lot from DVD to DVD. Just keep in mid that this one is no record maker. If you are a collector of the great Mafia films, from Goodfellows to the Godfather, will you want to add Donnie Brasco to this collection? Fugeddaboudit! I mean YES! Just be ready to go undercover yourself if you need to…
