Dragon's Lair II: Timewarp

DVD Review by Yanman

"You must be Dirk, Dirk the Daring, fetch me a drink from yonder well. Daphne is lost in the halls of time, a prisoner, she's under a spell."

Sometimes in the world of DVD everything old is new again, old movies are "new releases" and in the case of the Dragon's Lair series old arcade games are new interactive DVD games. If you have read our review of Dragon's Lair or Space Ace then our review of Dragon's Lair II: Timewarp will come as no surprise. This interactive DVD Game (For set top DVD players) will undoubtedly give you (or your kids) hours of enjoyment and at a one-time price instead of $.50 per play.

As Dirk the Daring you have now married the lovely princess Daphne (After saving her in the original Dragon's Lair) and you have 10 kids. Everything seems "And they lived happily ever after" until the evil wizard Mordroc decides to kidnap your bride to try and make her, his own. To add to your problems your mother-in-law is hot on your tale to "pound" in your responsibilities to save your wife and restore your family.

Transported by a clumsy time machine you venture out to begin your rescue assignment. The scenes you venture through are innovative to say the least, you run into the queen of hearts, the Cheshire cat, Adam & Eve, The pyramids of Egypt, and a piano that is more than just grand. Who can save your one true love from a faith worst than death, marriage to an evil ogre like wizard? Only Dirk can...

The video is very clean and obviously from a pretty clean master. There are a number of noticeable artifacts though, that original appeared to be because of the way the video "branches" depending on your movements. On further review however these artifacts also appear when the entire game is reviewed as a movie. They don't distract from game play however and that is what really maters in this type of DVD.

Audio is AC3 two channel stereo, and is very reminiscent of the original arcade version of the game. As a matter of fact if you leave the menu up on the screen for a few seconds without selecting something, the DVD automatically starts to repeat the game "preview" every 30 seconds or so, just like the arcade version did. Leave this running on your TV with the windows open and you'll be sure to lure the neighbors kids in for a look see.

There are only two extra's here a full length play through that allows you to watch the entire game instead of play it and a pre-production version of the video and audio including some pencil tests. It would have been nice if there were some more extras like the interviews with Don Bluth on the first Dragon's Lair, but not really a necessity on a game based DVD.

Prepare yourself brave warrior, don't let your bride be forever caught in the Timewarp, if you don't do it for yourself do it for the children…all ten of them!
