Edward Scissorhands

DVD Review by Yanman

"Forget about holding her hand, just think of the damage he could do other places…"

When it comes to creating a dark fantasy world, one name clearly stands out; Tim Burton is the king of darkness. His body of work includes the dark films of Beetlejuice, Batman, Batman Returns, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, and of course the comic fable Edward Scissorhands.

This is the classic beauty and the beast fairy-tale, with a little bit of the Frankenstein's monster mixed in, and is told to us by an ageing grandmother. Her story opens with the lonely mad scientist (Vincent Price) creating himself a companion from a production line robot. His name is Edward (Johnny Depp) and his transition to human is left incomplete due to the untimely death of his eccentric creator. Left to live alone in total darkness, and with razor sharp shears in the place of his missing hands, Edward leads a bleak existence.

His life is completely changed when determined Avon lady Peg Boggs finds him in his own private prison, and decides to take him home with her. Here the neighborhood looks at him as a spectacle, and put him to work carving their topiaries, grooming the dogs, and even styling their hair. Here he also meets the lovely Kim Boggs (Winona Ryder), and falls desperately in love with her. As the neighbor's tolerance of Edward's differences begins to wane, the Boggs family is forced to rethink the status of their new house guess. What will happen to him, and will Kim ever feel the same way he does?

Video and audio quality are just average or below with nothing to make them stand out. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen at an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. While is somewhat understandable that the dark scenes here would appear soft with some artifacting, it is harder to explain away the noticeable dirt throughout this transfer, leaving age as the only possible answer. The Dolby Digital 4.0 Surround is also somewhat of a disappointment, with its obvious lack of bass, and rather dull surround effects.

While there are a few extras, we would have hoped for more for something more from a "10th Anniversary Edition" DVD. The extras here include two audio commentaries one by Tim Burton and a second by composer Danny Elfman. Other extras include a featurette, Concept art, TV spots, and some "sound bite" video clips that are very dirty. Who knows, maybe Fox is saving the really good extras (if there are any) for the 25th anniversary.

Edward Scissorhands is a new era fairy-tale, with a slightly older target audience then usual. While this PG-13 rated comic flight of the imagination may too dark for younger viewers, everyone can stand to learn the lesson; just because a person is different, it shouldn't make them an outcast. Everyone can be a useful member of society, even a man with metal bladed hands. Hey, is that snow?
