Field of Dreams

DVD Review by Yanman

I promise not to use the most over hyped line from this movie in my review. There, with that out of the way let us get started. Based on the book, Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella, this is not a story about baseball, at least not ONLY about baseball. It is the story of Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hearing voices, and following a dream. Even if following that dream costs him his farm. His ever supporting wife Annie (Amy Madigan) wavers only slightly when standing by "her man".

The voice in the cornfield instructs Ray to construct a baseball diamond. Ray turns a cornfield into a place where miracles can and do happen. After completing the ball field "Shoeless Joe" Jackson (Ray Liotta) shows up from the dead to redeem his name. There's not enough room in this review to tell all of Joe's story, but suffice it to say that being accused of throwing the World Series in the fifties will get you a bad name in the world of sports. The voice is not done with bringing back Joe though, it keeps talking to Ray, providing him vague clues of what to do next.

Ray's instructions lead him to Boston where he meets the reclusive and eccentric Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), a 1960's author who has given up writing to avoid the spotlight.

After much persuading, Terence joins Ray in deciphering the mystery voice's cryptic messages. Their next stop on the "road of dreams" is Chishom Minnesota looking for Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, he played only one inning of only one game for the Giants in 1922 and never got up to bat. Upon their arrival in Minn. They find that Dr. Graham (Burt Lancaster) died years earlier, and was considered a saint on Earth to the people in his small town. It seems that old doc Graham gave more to the people than just medicine, he gave them love and hope. Now more confused than ever, Ray goes out to get "some air" and soon discovers himself transported to the past where he runs into Graham. Graham refuses to join the band on their way to Iowa simply stating that being a doctor had rewarded his life completely. That said, the Mystery tour continues on the open road. A hitchhiker on the side of the road turns out to be a younger "Moonlight" Graham, looking for a place to play baseball with the big leaguers.

Arriving home only to discover more famous ballplayers from the past, that only his family can see, Ray also finds out that his brother-in-law is trying to foreclose on his farm. It appears that you can't make money on a farm with no crops, or can you?

The audio and video are good considering the age of this release. The video transfer is clean, and with out any artifacts. The inspiring sunsets of Iowa are breathtaking and very clean on DVD. On the audio side we have a Pro-Logic surround soundtrack that provides clear dialog but is slight in its use of the surround channel. A dual layer widescreen 1.85:1 non anamorphic disk, Field of Dreams has a number of extras including:

  • The Field of Dreams Scrapbook (A 90 minute making of Field of Dreams).
  • Full length feature Commentary - with director Phil Alden Robinson and Director of photography John Lindley.
  • Production Notes
  • Cast & Filmmakers Bios
  • Theatrical Trailer

If you believe in miracles, like touching family movies, or have ever played catch with your dad, if you watch it you will enjoy. (Hey I only promised not to directly quote it!)
