Galaxy Quest

DVD Review by Yanman

"Never give-up, never surrender."

Movies that mock sci-fi TV and/or films have almost become a genre of their own. However, unlike Spaceballs or Airplane 2, Galaxy Quest doesn't only mock the sci-fi genre, but itself as well. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and crew give inspired performances as the 1970s TV actors turned cosmic defenders. Even if you're not a Star Trek fan, you'll get more than just a chuckle or two from this one. Interesting extras accompany the above average video quality and top-notch sound.

In the late 70's and early 80's the Galaxy Quest TV show made a four year run. When the show is cancelled at the end of that run however, the cast of actors are relegated to appearing at sci-fi conventions and store openings. After the almost twenty years of attending these events, our troop is showing its age and a growing hatred of their forced leader Jason Nesmith (Allen).

When Nesmith is approached by a Thermians (that have mistaken the show for a "historical document") to command their ship, he just assumes that they are fans or employers, asking him to reprise his life long role. Upon figuring out that he is really in space, commanding a real spacecraft (created by watching the TV show), and is under siege, he decides he really needs the help of his old crew and his "disconnected" fans. Non-trekkies will still enjoy this movie, but hardcore convention going fans will probably find themselves watching it a lot more than once.

Video quality of this Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1 DVD is certainly above average, with only minor background compression artifacting, and the occasional transfer flaw.

One could easily provide a one-word review of the 5.1 Dolby Digital Soundtrack (also available in DTS), and that would be WOW! From spacecraft flybys and minefield explosion to the deep bass footsteps of a rather ticked of rock creature, this soundtrack will put your receiver thru its paces.

While there are only a few extras here, there are some rather interesting ones. Take for instance the Thermian language audio track, where you can listen to the entire movie in the aliens' native tongue, a rather high-pitched squeal language. Or for real fun, try out the "Omega 13" option, but be sure to watch the movie first (it won't let you if you don't anyway).

The premise of this movie and the quality of the acting is so good that I could almost see them making a TV series out of it. Now wouldn't that be interesting, a TV series based on a movie about a cancelled TV series' cast that have become heroes. By Grabthar's hammer, by the sons of Warvan, stranger things have happened in Hollywood.
