Godzilla (1998)

DVD Review by Yanman

"Size does matter"

I was very surprised to read how many reviews (as well as friends and acquaintances) gave this movie a poor (or worse) review. Do you remember the original Godzilla movies? No plot, mismatched audio, unbelievable and bad special effects plus a monster that somehow changed size throughout the film. Therefore, if you use only the past efforts as a watermark, Godzilla (1998) is an over-the-top sensation.

The "new" story goes something like this, there is some nuclear testing in the French Polynesian Islands, where some amphibians are over exposed to the nuclear fall out. It seems that one of the original creators (Tomoyuki Tanaka) requirements for allowing the remake was that it had to have "the bomb" caused this, theme to it.

After the creature attacks a tanker and then a small village its time for the military team to call in the expert "the worm guy" Niko Talopoulos (Matthew Broderick). He has earned the name worm guy because he has spent the last three years studying the effect of nuclear accelerated growth of the earthworms around the Chernobyl reactor site. Not everyone on the team believes "Nick's" theories, but most prove to be dead on. While investigating the "accident", scenes the team keeps running in to a "French insurance adjuster" named Philippe Roache (Jean Reno) who turns out to be more than meets the eye.

Tracking the monster across the ocean, the tired band of military misfits finally realizes the creatures has set its sights on taking a bite out of the big apple. After chasing the animal all over the Manhattan (and destroying a large part of it along the way) the city's mayor (nope I'm not giving that away either) is left asking where does a 400 foot monster hide in the big city? Anywhere he wants to!

Audio quality is superb, the Dolby digital 5.1 soundtrack will definitely give your subwoofer and surrounds a through workout. The New York City chase scenes make my list for demo quality sound and action. If you are looking to show off, or just want to wake up the neighbors, this will do the trick.

If you are the type that sits through a DVD a number of times just looking for compression artifacts, there are a few to be found (mostly during the very dark scenes in The Nest); but for the most part the video is crisp, clean, and otherwise unflawed. We can't give this one our highest rating but still real close at four stars.

There are a large number of extras here including, a featurette, Special FX Supervisor Commentary, photo gallery, a music video and more. Add an interesting animated menu that gets your heart started right from the minute you out in the player to make this one extra special.

If you're ready to catch Godzilla on DVD then grab your favorite Chihuahua, get yourself some tacos, and make sure you get a bigger box.
