In 1981 Heavy Metal came on to the scene as a loud, nasty, r-rated, nude cartoon. After being in the midnight movies for years, it now has a near-cult following and with it's release to DVD last year it has been discovered by entirely new set of fans. Early this year (2000) Heavy Metal 2000 was released. More of a new movie in the genre then a sequel, Heavy Metal 2000 has received less then stellar reviews. This one is a single story rather then multiple ones like the original, and has more sex and violence then its predecessor as well. If you like those things this one is for you. When a space pirate named Tyler finds the key to immortality, it turns him into a bloodthirsty maniac, willing to obliterate anything that stands in the way. Including the lowly planet of Eden, and most of its inhabitants. Out of the ruble one Amazon of a woman rises up to attempt to avenge her father's death, and rescue her kidnapped sister. This is easier said then done however, because Tyler is not just a lunatic, but he is a lunatic that has a potion that heals his wound. How do you kill someone that won't stay dead? Only with the help of an ex-pirate, a strange monk, and a rock man, you may just have a slim chance; a very slim chance. Presented in a widescreen Anamorphic format that preserves the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the video quality here is very good. The color of animation here is clean and clear. There are a small number of digital artifacts here in the darker scenes, but nothing that would be too distracting. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack here rocks, literally, with a lot of heavy metal music, ergo the name of the film. The sound field fills the room from all directions, front, center and surround. Throw in some deep bass for good measure, and you have a top notch soundtrack, worth listening to. There are only a limited number of extras here including a featurette on Julie Strain (The model for FAKK 2), a voice talents featurette, and animation tests. There could have been a lot more here we are sure, but something is always better then nothing. If you are a fan of the first Heavy Metal, like rock and roll, or just want to see a tall beautiful woman kill, decapitate and maim, Heavy Metal 2000 is for you. If you prefer G-ratings for your cartoons, look elsewhere. Now where did I put that key…
