Jurassic Park

DVD Review by Yanman

"How did you do this? … I'll show you!"

Lets face it there are a few movies that really don't need a lot of introduction. Most people have seen the 1993 mega-hit Jurassic Park it is almost a given. So the reviewer's job here is going to focus more on the extras, video quality, and audio then what our normal reviews do. If you have never seen Jurassic Park, well then we say buy it or rent it now, it is certainly worth at least one viewing.

"Dr. Grant, my dear Dr. Sadler, Welcome to Jurassic Park"

There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that the DVD version of this movie is better then its VHS counter part, it just is. But, last week I pulled out our copy of Jurassic Park on Laserdisc, and watched it all the way through so that I could have it fresh in my mind before writing this review for comparison sake, I will do my best to compare and contrast the two formats where it makes sense.

The anamorphic widescreen DVD is presented in the movie's original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The video is clean and clear, with only the hardest to find flaws. On our 56-inch widescreen HD reference set, the DVD is hands down better then its laserdisc counterpart. With progressive scan, and the added resolution that anamorphic enhancement has, any one with this type of equipment will clearly see the difference. Will those with out a widescreen set and progressive DVD players still see the difference? We think so.

The audio here is incredible. For those that don't remember, Jurassic Park was the first movie released in a Digital Format, know as DTS. I remember driving across town to find a theater that had the new format. This DVD is available in both a Dolby Digital format and a DTS format. While there is a lot of debate about which of these audio formats is better (let your ears be your guide), one thing is clear you get more extras on the Dolby Digital version. With that said we have chosen here to review the Dolby Digital version. Run out buy a second sub, sit back, bring the dinosaurs back to life, but prepare to wake the neighbors, and to have the cops called, because this one can go that deep. The laserdisc version we have is only a Dolby Pro-Logic version, and does not even compare to this new digital version. There were both DTS and Dolby Digital versions of this laserdisc out there however.

While the two-disc set has become the new standard in special editions, this disc proves that a single disc can still be special. The over 60 minutes of extras here include The Making of Jurassic Park, Early Per-Production Meetings, Storyboards, Production Photos, Animatics, a boat load of DVD-ROM extras, and more. We still have two questions here though, "Will we ever get a director's commentary out of Steven Spielberg?" and "Are there more extras out there warranting a two-disc set?" Only time will tell.

For the movie collectors and DVD fans, this one is a must have and it makes our list of island must have movies. If you own this one on another format, whether that be laserdisc or VHS a upgrade will certainly be worth the money spent, because Jurassic Park the DVD is in a league of it's own. Buy this one now because, all DVDs may have some problems, but when a Disney DVD goes crazy it doesn't eat the viewer.
