Lethal Weapon 4

DVD Review by Yanman

"OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK "

Our favorite police team is back Mel Gibson and Danny Glover reprise their roles as detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh. This series is in its four installment over the course of 12 years and is still going strong. Also reprising their roles from the past are Joe Pesci (Leo Getz) and Rene Russo (Lorna Cole). New to the Lethal Weapon family is Chris Rock as detective Lee Butters. The magic is still here and the on screen interaction between the key players adds to the overall story.

What would you do if you were a cop and came up on a wacko using a flame-thrower and machine gun to blow up businesses? Take off all your clothes, dance around and cluck like a chicken of course. At least until your partner can get a clean shot at the assailants fuel tank, causing him to fly through the air and crash into a gasoline tanker blowing up the entire area. Oh and during all this don't forget to tell your partner that his girlfriend (or daughter) is pregnant and that he is going to be a father (or grandfather). Well maybe that's not the way you would do it, but it does work as the opening of a Lethal Weapon movie. Don't ya think?

Almost nine months pass before our tired band gets into trouble again (hard to believe). Somehow, a quite fishing trip, where the only real excitement is when Leo catches a shark and tries to shoot it, turns into an international smuggling mystery. A freighter carrying hundreds of illegal Chinese immigrants almost run over Sgt. Murtaugh's fishing boat, then start shooting at it. After Riggs boards the boat and discovers the illegal aliens stashed on board, the questions and the fun begin. Who brought them here? Moreover, for what purpose? Why is one family more sought after then any other?

Mix in the following sub plots, will Riggs get married (before she has the baby?), where is Murtaugh's money coming from?, is Butters gay?, who is the father of Murtaugh's grandchild?, and you have a Lethal Weapon movie worthy of it's name.

Unwavering good video quality is present though out this DVD. There are no video errors or flaws here, and the picture is crisp clean and impressive. I have no problem giving this one our highest rating five stars.

Sound is paramount in any action movie, and this film is no exception, the Dolby Digital 5.1 is incredible, and definitely worthy of the name Lethal Weapon. For the opening scene the room is filled with sound, rich base, and doesn't stop until the closing credits. A five star rating here as well.

There are numerous extras here, including a behind-the-scenes documentary, a cast and crew interview gallery, and a director's feature-length commentary. Add to these, deleted scenes from the first three Lethal Weapon movies that accomplished their goal of getting me to want to watch these movies again, and you have a great list of extras. I would have given the extras the highest mark as well if it wasn't for just one thing, they put the extra's on the other side of the disk requiring you to have to get up to flip the disc (Yuck!). Warner, if it doesn't fit add a layer, not a side.

Ok, Ok, Ok, if you love action movies, get on your cell phone, go through the drive-thru, and get ready for the explosive entertainment offered by Lethal Weapon 4. You are not getting too old for this . . .
