Mission: Impossible

DVD Review by Yanman

"Good morning Mr. Phelps."

Reviving the television series for the 1960's, Mission: Impossible is an action packed, fast paced, and entertaining movie. Tom Cruise is intense as Ethan Hunt an undercover operative framed for murder and theft. The whodunit style of the movie seems dated though; I just kept feeling that we had been here before somehow.

Today's agents receive their orders in the fairly standard method, a self-destructing tape. What is the mission this time? Video tape an enemy spy as he attempts to steal the list of real names of our undercover operatives. The would normally be easy enough, just break into a secure embassy, use a clever disguise, put you're video-cam glasses near by, and get the guy on his way out. Easy Right? Well it would have been if it wasn't for someone on the inside (a mole), disrupting the mission killing the entire team, with one noticeable exception Ethan Hunt manages to live. This makes him the prime suspect in an ongoing investigation into internal espionage.

It turns out however that he is not truly the sole survivor of the mission. Somehow, Claire (Emmanuelle Beart) the beautiful wife of the mission leader Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), manages to survive as well, raising Ethan's suspicions of the events that have just transpired. Not knowing whom he can trust, Ethan sets off on a mission of his own. Maybe by stealing the list of undercover operatives himself he can flush out the mole and clear his name. How hard can that be? He'll just have to hire two disavowed agents, and break into the CIA most impenetrable vault, right under their noses, in the Pentagon. I guess it is all in a day's work when you’re a super spy.

The picture quality is very good on this disc. I found no noticeable flaws or compression artifacts. Add a bonus point for the single side option of either widescreen or pan & scan. Unfortunately, the widescreen version is not 16x9 enhanced, so we are back to only four points on this one.

Sound is what makes an action movie, no doubt about it. And this one is no exception, the sound is nothing short of spectacular. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound track comes at you from every direction, front, back, and the deepest of bass, are all combined to bring you to the edge of your seat.

Ever time I write a review of a Paramount DVD I find myself asking the same question. Where are the extras? And this disc is no exception to that rule. The only thing here is the trailer and as I've written in the past. I no longer count that as an extra. Why not at least include the music video for the over hyped theme song? A great big zero again Paramount!

You're mission should you chose to except it, is to watch this movie on DVD. If you or any member of your IMF team is captured, we will disavow all knowledge that we ever saw it. This review will self destruct in five seconds . . .
