Pulp Fiction

DVD Review by Yanman

Pulp Fiction

1. Pulp /`pulp/ n. 1. A soft, moist, shapeless mass of matter.

2. A magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper.

American Heritage Dictionary
New College Edition

With that definition on the screen so opens Pulp Fiction, my question is this, which of the two definitions does the writer/director (Quintin Tarantino) want us to associate this film with? The cover would suggest the latter of the two, yet at times the movie does take on the look of a soft, shapeless (not moist though) mass of matter. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of the movie, I just had to watch it a few times to gain a complete appreciation for the films. The movie is presented out of sequence, when compared to the time line of the actually events. The movie's opening scene is a prologue to events that happen later in the film (even at this later time they're shown out of chronological order). The story follows two hit men, (John Travolta and Samuel L.Jackson), their boss (Ving Rhames), their boss's extremely sexy wife (Uma Thurman) and a desperate, last chance prizefighter (Bruce Willis), as there paths cross, get entangled, and then separate. It’s a fast paced romp that’s intense entertaining, and shockingly different.

This is a dialog driven movie (thus all the quotes from the movie), because of this fact the differences between the Dolby Pro-Logic laserdisc and the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack are only subtle, although they are still noticeable. The video is clean and crisp with only the slightest of video noise. This movie is RSDL with the unnoticeable layer change coming 120 minutes into the 154-minute movie. With the amount of extra space that must be remanding on this disc the question that has to come to mind is "Where the Extras?" I mean, there is nothing at all on this disc, not even a trailer. We know they are out there, the basic laser disc has six trailers on it alone. And Criterion laserdisc edition has many others. I'm guessing we may see a Criterion DVD versions in the future at a higher price point (No letters asking when this is only my speculation).

So go out and get yourself a big Kohana burger, or a Royale with cheese, take your fathers watch from its uncomfortable hiding place and watch Pulp Fiction its one interesting ride.
