Saving Private Ryan, The Men, The Mission, The Movie

"This Ryan better be worth it, he'd better go home and cure some disease or invent a longer lasting light bulb or something."

Every once in a blue moon a movie comes along that not only reports on history but also makes history in the process. Saving Private Ryan is one of those films; winner of 5 Academy Awards®. In addition to the awards for best director of 1998 and film editing, it won much-deserved awards for cinematography, sound and sound effects editing. Also, it has forever changed the way that history will remember June the 6, 1944. If the feature makes you think, then the making of featurette Saving Private Ryan - "Into the Breach"-- may make you cry as you realize that the cost of freedom is infinitely high. This DVD has the most film like quality yet, with demo quality sound, Saving Private Ryan is a must own for anyone with a Home Theater system.

On June 6,1944, the American, British and Canadian launched the largest invasion in World War II, a day that history will forever remember as D-Day. This blood bath of a day marked the turning point of the war. The casualties were great, but the goal was greater: to save the free world and to stop the tertiary known as the Nazis.

How much should one family have to sacrifice for its country? In the case of the Ryan family of Payton Iowa, three noble sons gave the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, leaving only the youngest son alive to carry on the family name. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) is assigned the dubious task of finding Private, James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), and sending him home. But how do you find one man during a tumultuous war?

With the dark format of this film, one might fear that the video quality might suffer from artifacting or softness, but nothing could be further from the truth. This DVD has the most film like quality that this reviewer has seen from this format. The layer change at 1:33:34 is only very slightly noticeable, but if you're looking for it you'll be able to find it.

Looking for a reference quality disc to show off that Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system? Then look no further, the first ten minutes of this disc contains the best sound that a movie can offer. Make sure that your subwoofer is in good shape, and warn the neighbors that a war is about to break out in your living room. (No matter how far away they live). Give this one an extra star, and add it to our best sound DVD list.

There are good extras here, but only a limited number of them, so count this one as just average.

If you have ever wondered what war was like or if you are just looking for a reason to feel good about being free, then get ready for battle. It is your mission to bring a mother's son back to where every son, every father, every brother belongs, home!
