DVD Review by Yanman

"I see dead people…"

No the quote above is not from the movie the Sixth Sense (well it is but…), it is from the most recent movie parody Scary Movie. Making fun of such recent horror and thriller movies as Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sixth Sense, The Blair Which Project, and even some of your favorite commercials (Whatzzzzaaaap?), Scary Movie takes you on a teen filed slasher romp like no other. It is silly humor to be sure. If you don't like other parody movies like Airplane! and Hot Shots, or if you haven't seen most of the films listed above, then you might not get the joke.

When a group of "average" teens, with below average IQ's and above average looks find themselves and there friends being stalked by a easily recognizable masked killer, the number of victims begin to pile up. But there is more then just gore here because this one takes ever cliché and turns it into a joke. Watch as Carmen Electra gets slashed, Marlon Wayans gets trashed, and some of today's hottest teens say stupid things unabashed. Will the killer get you in the end? Who cares you'll die laughing, either way.

Video here is excellent, with no noticeable artifacts or dirt. Some of the darker scenes do have insignificant amount of visible film grain, but his will not be distracting to most views. Presented in anamorphic widescreen (or as the packaging calls it "Enhanced for 16x9 televisions") in the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1.

While there is some suspense building sound here, for the most part this one takes the route of a comedy and is primarily dialog. What we look for from a movie of this nature is a clean, clear front sound stage, and this 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack does deliver this.

There are a decent amount of extras here, but as is the going trend, you will need a computer with a DVD-ROM drive to enjoy some of the coolest ones. For instance the Scary Movie: A guide for the culturally challenged feature, which walks you through the references to other movie, TV, and real life. Other DVD-ROM extras include a ScreenSaver, Screenplay Viewer, and character Profiles. DVD extras consist of additional Scenes and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

Lets face it not everyone laughs at the same things, what some people find funny other people may find offensive. If you are the type of person that is easily offended by anything, and I do mean anything then I say pass on this one. If you are open-minded, can make fun of yourself, and have no problems with "slapstick humor", then prepare to laugh because Scary Movie is more uproarious then Scary. I'll be right back…
