Scream 3

DVD Review by Yanman

"You are dealing with the concluding chapter of a trilogy."

Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox Arquette all reprise their roles in this third in the series of Scream movies. Unlike many sequels, this one is true to its roots and at least as good, if not better then its predecessors. While this has been dubbed the final installment in a "planned trilogy", as is always the case with successful movies, rumors are flying that a sequel will undoubtedly be made. While this chapter does leave you asking for more, we can only hope that the powers that be stick with the original plan and leave this as our final scream.

Chapter one sets the rules…

While the original Woodsboro killings have started to fade, the Stab movies based on the event have gone on to great success. While filming the third sequel to Stab something starts to go horribly wrong, the actors are being killed in the same sequence, as in the script. This leaves you to wonder, what is real and what is fantasy.

Chapter two bends the rules …

Even after the movie shoot becomes a victim the killings continue. So what are the rules for the final installment of a horror movie trilogy? Our famous rule reader is back for a cameo, to give us some super trilogy rules. "One: You've got a killer who's gonna be superhuman. Number two: Anyone, including the main character, can die." And "Number three: The Past will come back to bite you in the ass."

FORGET THE RULES…

The video quality is very good, above average at least, presented in Anamorphic widescreen in its original theatrical aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1. While the video quality of the feature is very good, some of the extras however border on un-watchable (like the deleted scenes), due to artifacting.

Horror films use sound to create an air of foreboding more effectively than any other genre of film. Scream 3 surrounds you with both subtle whisper and shockingly loud bass filled stingers. Dolby Digital 5.1.

There are a decent number of extras here, more than there was in the second films DVD, but still less than the large number of them in the first. Bonus Materials include outtakes, behind the scenes from all three movies, alternate ending with commentary, and a feature length commentary by Wes Craven. For true extra hounds like us there is also a rumor floating that a four disk Scream set with added extras is in the works. More on that as it happens.

When the first Scream movie hit came out it revitalized the slasher film genre. Now with the trilogy it has set a new record for horror box office take, with over 300 million dollars. Scream 3 seems just as fresh and new as the original. For those people that love to find mistakes, check out the back of the DVD where it repeatedly calls the Woodsboro killings the " Greensboro Killings", ooops! So in closing let me say good luck, Godspeed, and for some of you I'll see you soon.
