“Screw the dolphins!” “A guy tried that last
year, banned from Sea World for life.” The finest guy in school, star athlete, class
president, and all around stud makes a bet with his classmates that he can
turn any girl, even the schools biggest geek into the prom queen. Story
sound familiar? If you have ever seen Pygmalion or My Fair Lady it should,
this is an update of the same story line. There are a lot of remakes out
there, some good, some not so good, this one falls somewhere in between
and is definitely aimed at a teenaged audience. So what happens when the most popular girl in school (If not also the most stuck-up) (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) breaks up with her long time boyfriend Zach (Freddie Prinze Jr.)? What does he do? Cry? Freak-out? Mope for a week? No, he makes a bet with his buddies, that with him at her side, he can make any girl in school prom queen. When his friends pick the geekyest art student in class Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) however, even the class president has his doubts. But with a lot of effort, some help from his friends, and maybe just a small bit of luck, Zach starts to work miracles. Zach helps make a lot of changes in Laney, new haircut, contacts, a pretty dress, and new friends. Zach has everything planned out, everything that is right up to the point where he falls in love with her, that’s when the fun really begins. Video here is clean without any noticeable
flaws. The content however is not very visually detailed, and lacks a full
screen version that could have easily been added. Only three stars here. The audio here is Dolby Digital 5.1 (Some reviews say that it is only 2.0, but I have verified that it is truly 5.1) and does have some limited moments where it fills the room (music mostly). Not a demo disc though. The only extra here is a music video for the song “Kiss Me” performed by Sixpence None the Richer. I still can’t understand why the studios can’t find at least a few more extras to add to their DVD releases. Not even one full star here, lets call it ¾. If you don’t mind a little bit of bubblegum with your movie or if you are just in the mood for a feel good Hollywood flick, then take off your glasses, put on your best prom outfit, and get ready to loose your heart because she really is all that.
