Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit

DVD Review by Yanman

"You see Deloris, we need your help here, at St. Francis, we seem to have got in slightly over our heads."

Whoopi Goldberg reprises her role as sister Mary Clarence, the signing nun that saved the day in the original Sister Act. Also reprising their incredibly funny roles from the first film as nuns, are Kathy Najimy, Mary Wickes, Wendy Makkena, and Maggie Smith. Add the vocal talent of one then relatively unknown at the time Lauryn Hill (This movie was released in 1993 a year prior to the release of the Fugees' first album) and you have a funny and talent filled comedy. The video quality here shows its age a bit, sound is OK, but there is not an extra to be had.

Now if you don't remember the first Sister Act, it stars Whoopi Goldberg as lounge singer who hides out as a nun, because her boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) comes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's behavior, but sister Mary Clarence (Whoopi) shows how laugher and song can add life to even the most uptight convent. It is interesting that Touchstone (Disney) decided to release Sister Act 2 to DVD prior to releasing the original.

In this sequel, Whoopi Goldberg reprises her role as Deloris Van Cartier, a Los Vegas lead act signer. When her friends from the convent stop by to see her show it becomes apparent fairly quickly that they are looking for more than just free tickets, they need her help. What can a Vegas signer do for a bunch of nuns? Well you see these nuns have become teachers at a tough intercity catholic school that is really close to being shut down. Can Deloris, posing as sister Mary Clarence, convince these difficult students to unite in song, win a competition, and save a school?

The video here is presented in non-anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen, my guess here is that this was only a "matted" film to start off with and that a anamorphic version doesn't even exist, but I've been wrong before. As for the picture, it is of good quality with only a small number of areas of softness.

The audio is 5.1 Dolby Digital, but the content of the film is such that there is little here to really "wow" you. Still check out the "performance" scenes for there use of sound.

Extras? Nope.

There are some surprise performances here, Lauryn Hill, Tanya Blount, and yep that really is Jennifer Love Hewitt as Margaret. If your life needs a little divine intervention of the Whoopi kind, then it is time to get back in the habit again.
