Space Ace

DVD Review by Yanman

"Space Ace Defender of justice, truth, and the planet earth."

Space Ace is the latest in games available for you to play on your set top DVD player. In the past we have reviewed a number of others including Dragon's Lair and TLC. Space Ace is from the creators of Dragon's Lair, Don Bluth and Rick Dyer. While Space Ace retains the overall look and feel on Dragons Lair, it adds one really interesting twist. You have a choice of which of two characters you want to play. (More on that later). This one provides many hours of game play with out the need of inserting a quarter, and if your as bad as I am at video games that alone could save you a fortune.

Well it appears that the evil Commander Borf has set his mind on taking over the planet earth. And if that isn't enough he has kidnapped your girlfriend. Now as the superhero Space Ace you feel that you would have no problem over coming this evil madman. There is just one problem however, the evil commander has got himself an "Infanto Ray". a weapon that changes you into a much younger version of yourself. (Now here is a weapon I wouldn't mind getting shot by once. I wish I were 18 again!)

As you work your way through this fantasy world you will reach areas where you have to make a game play decision using your DVD remote control (Left, Right, Up, Down, Fire Gun). As mentioned earlier there is one other interesting twist to this game, you have the option from time to time to chose whether you play the game as Space Ace or as his weaker alter-ego Dexter. Depending on your choice game play changes, easier if your Dexter, harder if you are Ace. I tried playing both ways and let me tell you it is much more challenging to play as Ace.

The video is very clear and crisp. There is a slight pause in the video after a directional choice is made, but this is expected and does not distract from game play.

The audio is Dolby Digital but only in Pro Logic surround, but considering the original release date this is great sound.

Includes exclusive interviews with Don Bluth and Rick Dyer, co-creators of  Space Ace. I can't think of any other extras that you would want to add to a DVD of this type, so it gets a higher rating than normal just for having any extras at all.

If you love video games, have kids, or you are just looking for something new to put in that "new fangled DVD thingy you bought, Space Ace is fun for all. Be valiant space warrior the fate of the earth is in your hands . . .
