Other Halloween Reviews!Species II

DVD Review by Yanman

"Not for one nation, not for one people, not for one creed, but for all human kind."

My recollection of the first Species movie was less that fond, and experience has told me that sequels rarely surpass there predecessor (Aliens, and T2 are two of a handful of exceptions however). Nevertheless, maybe because I set my expectations so low or because the plot and story are completely different, I was actually pleasantly surprised by this movie. The special effects are good, and the story is plausible, and only at the end did it go just a little "over the top".

On a mission to Mars, Commander Ross (Justin Lazard), the son of a senator, becomes the first man to walk on the surface of the red planet. He unfortunately picks up more than just "planet samples" however; he becomes infected by an alien entity. Upon returning to earth, the alien inside him sets out to accomplish one goal and one goal only to procreate with human women. Hiding this fact is impossible to hide because of the violent nature in which the quickly gestated "infants" are born.

Using Eve (Natasha Henstridge) a half alien half human clone, Dr. Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) and hired gun Press Lennox (Michael Madsen) to attempt to find Ross before his alien offspring can grow to adulthood. They underestimate Eve's drive to mate however, and she escapes to attempt to mate with Ross in order to create a purer bread of unstoppable alien that could wipeout mankind.

Crisp clean DVD video, is apparent throughout this disc. I did not notice any artifacts or flaws the colors were clear and vivid. MGM gets bonus points for having both the Widescreen and "Standard" version on the same side of a dual layered disc. High quality.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack was flawless as well, and filled the room with sound during the entire movie. No complaints here either.

The extras are above average as well, not the most by far but certainly not the least either. Extras include unrated deleted footage not shown in theaters, Director's commentary, and an 8-page booklet of notes and trivia (why not put this on the disc?).

If you like Sci-fi, or just really enjoy watching two aliens "go at it", then put on your space suit, lock the barn, and get ready to be surprised by Species II.
