"Someone asked me once if I knew the difference between a civilian and a citizen. I know now. A citizen has the courage to make the safety of the human race their personal responsibility!" What would you do if, the only way to become a citizen of earth were to enlist in military service? Now before you answer, remember that we have discovered that there is a planet of bugs that is attempting to colonize the earth by hurling asteroids towards us that have their spores on them. Well if you are three collage student friends from Buenos Aries, you may come to different answers that all lead to the same place. Our three friends end up in different divisions on the military that have the same friendly rivalry and sometimes disregard as our current military divisions. Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) is the school jock that has an uncanny capability to play football and gymnastics but a very low competence for math that, against his parents' better judgment, allows his civic duty and beautiful girlfriend Carmen (Denise Richards) to talk him into "Doing his part". Johnny end up in the Military Infantry (MI) the hard working ground troops that believes "MIs do the dying". Although Rico hopes that joining up will bring he and Carmen closer together, her superior math skill and love of space travel land her a few galaxies over. Our final member of the trio Carl is none other that Neil Patrick Harris of Doogie Howser fame. Carl is a brilliant scientist type will the ability to read animals minds and to control there thoughts (apparently easily applied to insects as well), this is a real plus that secures him a cushy intelligence job. During their less than smooth tactical training our lovers, now separated by distance and lifestyle, grow apart from each other and begin to develop other relationships. A war breaks out when, before training can be completed, the enemy "bugs" drop a meteorite on our hero's hometown. With instructions to kill anything with more than two legs, the ground troops team up with their high-flying counterparts to help kick some bug butt.If you are the type of person that doesn't have a problem with leaving your brain at the door prior to going to a movie, or if you prefer action and splatting to plot and character development then this may be a movie you would enjoy. Don't take that the wrong way, this is not to say that the movie is not good for what it is (a sci-fi, shoot em up thriller), just don't expect any best actor or best picture awards for this one. There was one question that remained in my mind from the start of this movie and still remains now, "why not just nuke the whole planet?" but I guess that would have made for a much shorter movie. The audio on this 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack is very good, often filling the room with lots of rapid gunfire and screaming bug sounds, the scene where the space cruiser is destroyed and breaks apart is especially good. The video is adequate, although soft in a few of the darker scenes, and exhibits no notable digital artifacts. The extras were very good with a large number of deleted scenes, a directory's commentary, making of, along with a and number of worth while others that are now being considered the norm (Cast bios, trailers, etc.). So if you decide that your ready to become a citizen of the world and you're not going to let any brain sucking, good for nothing, giant slug stand in your way, then put on your helmet and watch, until you get killed or find something better, Starship Troopers.
