Supernova

DVD Review by Yanman

Sometimes it is very hard to be a movie reviewer. I know that my mother told me that "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." How would it look though if you opened this review and that was here was a blank page? Ok, it's not that bad, but it is close. Supernova is the type of plot that would have made a better Star Trek episode, then it does a big budget film, it's a short story stretched way to long. Still, it does have fantastic visuals, great special effects, and home theater rocking digital sound. Just don't look at the plot to closely, there it is easy to find fault.

The crew of Nightingale 229, a medical vessel, is called into deep space on a emergency plea. The only way to get there in time is to dimension jump, a type of warp that can be dangerous to human life if they're not protected properly in a special containment pod. The writers do get bonus points, for making it necessary for the occupants to be naked in these pods.

During the dimension jump, the captain dies (something wrong with his pod), leaving control of the ship to the new, ex-military, rebel, co-pilot. The crew of course has little to no respect for their forced leader, but reluctantly follows him anyway.

After almost crashing and with their ship in desperate need of repair, the crew sets out to investigate the distress call that brought them to the other side of the universe. Nothing they have trained for can prepare them for what they find, a mad man with a secret. A secret that could change the universe as we know it, and not for the better…

Video and audio quality are both above average. With an anamorphic widescreen picture, that is clear of any errors, and colors that appear to leap right off the screen and a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack that will certainly move the furniture in you listening area, once or twice. This DVD proves one thing for sure, even a pretty good looking and sounding turkey, is still just that a turkey!

There are some extras here including the fact that this is the "never-before-seen" R-rated version and 20 plus minutes of deleted scenes. Included in the missing scenes is an alternate ending, which also stinks! Lets face it who wants to watch extras, from a movie they didn't want to watch in the first place? Want to know why there is no director's commentary? Because he quit before the film could be completed, that's why! (See below for more details)

For anyone that does not believe that it is the director and his vision of a film that makes it successful, I give you Supernova. Original director Walter Hill left the film during post-production and had his name removed from the project. Even bringing in Francis Ford Coppola (uncredited) could not help save this disaster, and the pseudonym name "Thomas Lee" was uses as the credited director instead. Right before a star supernovas it has tremendous gravitational pull, one thing that is true about this Supernova, it really does suck!
