The Thomas Crown Affair

DVD Review by Yanman

"Do you really think I am going to sleep with the man I am investigating?"

Pierce Brosnan has become known for playing roles that have been done before; first James Bond (GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is Not Enough) and now he reprises the role of Thomas Crown originally portrayed by Steve McQueen in 1968. This version gets a little hotter than its predecessor however, with Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan doing their own love scenes. With a choice of widescreen or "standard" modified to fit your TV versions, the DVD video looks very good, audio is 5.1, and there are only limited extras. This DVD makes a good addition to most collections.

Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is a very well off businessman and art lover that is forced, for one reason or another, to sell his art gallery to some very smug corporate raiders. Just after the transaction, a very elaborate art heist is attempted and apparently foiled except for one painting, a $100 Million Dollar Monet.

It doesn't take long for Catherine Banning (Rene Russo), the beautiful insurance investigator, to figure out that Crown stole the painting, but how does she prove it? Her decision to use her beauty, cunning, and intelligence to get close, and I mean very close to him, may just backfire in the end. Will it be the cat that gets the prey in the end? Alternatively, will the mouse turn the tables and eat the cat? Either way you'll enjoy the ride.

The video here is offered in either anamorphic "Enhanced for widescreen TVs" widescreen, or in "standard modified to fit you screen" (that is if your screen is not wide :-)) versions. The video is very clean with only a small amount of softness in some dark screens.

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, while the movie doesn't have a lot of scenes that take full advantage of 5.1, the few that do sound great.

Does the menu count as an extra? If you said yes, then you would enjoy the "extra" that this DVD's menu offers. It is set up like an art gallery that you walk thru as you make selections of what to view next. As far as other extras go, there is really only one, and that is a feature-length director's commentary. In my mind, trailers and "collectible booklets" don't really count as "extras," but if you do consider them as such, adjust the score accordingly.

This one is a fun and sexy romp of a who done it, even if you do know who done it from the start. If you find yourself locked indoors for the weekend with that special someone, why not use the DVD as a Thomas Crown guide to love making, just be careful if the marble floors are cold. Now where did I put that Trojan…umm…horse that is.
