Titanic

DVD Review by Yanman

" Titanic, was called the ship of dreams, and it was it really was!"

Titanic may have been the ship of dreams but the movie Titanic was the box office smash that dreams are made of. Winner of 11 Academy Awards including best picture and written directed by James Cameron, this may be the greatest epic film of our time. The DVD certainly does the movie justice, the picture and the sound are incredible, but the lack of extras can only lead this reviewer to believe that a special edition will eventually follow.

The story starts in the present day with treasure seekers exploring the ship two miles down on the bottom of the ocean. When 94-year-old Rose (Gloria Stuart) hears that they are bringing up artifacts from the bottom she knows what they are looking for but she is really astonished when one of those artifacts is a boudoir drawing of her. She decides that it is time to tell her story, a story she has kept a secret for over 80 years.

When rose first arrives on the treasure seekers ship they don't believe she is who she say she is. But as her story unfolds all doubt is removed. The story she tells is more then just the story of a ship doomed to sink to the bottom of the ocean. It is the story of true love, the story of how this love can overcome the greatest differences. Even as their world literally sinks around them Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) give everything to be together. A real Romeo and Juliet story to be sure.

The picture here is good really good. While not Anamorphic, the picture is among some of the best we have seen, crisp, clean and vibrant. There are some compression artifacts in the dark ocean scenes, but I doubt many people will notice. The layer change at 108:16 is more noticeable however, but it very fast and perfectly placed at a scene change.

The audio is fantastic, definitely top notch. The sub was heart pounding while the sound completely filled room from all directions. While this is the closest I hope I ever get to a sinking luxury ocean liner, I can't imagine that it could sound any more frightening then this sound track. Add this one to our list of the best DVDs to demo Dolby Digital 5.1 with.

Extras? What extras? While it would appear that the reason there are no extras available on this one is simply because the capacity of the disk would not allow it. And DVD-18 (DS/DL) is still at least a few months away. But why not a two disk set? The Armageddon special addition set was done this way, why not Titanic? The list of extras they could have added are endless, deleted scenes, making of, and for me the most sought after item the making of the special effects. I have actually seen most of these items during the original movie hype. My bet is that a special edition of this one will follow in the years to come.

If you like a good love story, and have just over three hours to kill, then grab your significant other, a box of Kleenex and prepare to go back to Titanic. It will make you feel like "the king of the world".
