More Horror Reviews!Urban Legend

DVD Review by Yanman

“Mikey likes it”

Horror movies always get a bad rap, and Urban Legend has received the same treatment from most people. I do have to admit however that the premise of a young group of beautiful collage students getting hacked to death is starting to get more than just a little old. Still Urban Legend does bring a fresh twist to this “slasher” genre, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you don’t mine a misplaced “stinger” or two (the term used to describe that fake scare with the overly loud music) and you can get past that haunting feeling that we’ve see this all before, then you will enjoy Urban Legend.

Ok have you heard the one about the woman that gets in her car and there’s a killer waiting in the back seat? You have? How about the one about eating Pop Rock and then dinking a soda causing your stomach to explode, just like that kid in the Life commercial, Mikey? You Have? These things are known as Urban Legends. These are stories passed around either person to person or now more likely vie E-mail, usually attempt to teach a valuable lesson, but can rarely be confirmed (No really its true it happened to one of my Aunt’s friends brother, or so I heard). These new legends usually mean no harm and are circulated by people because they believe them, and think they are helping to warn others of a real threat; unfortunately all they tend to do is panic otherwise rational people.

In order to prevent the further spreading of these not quite true stories Professor Wexler (Robert Englund) teaches a class contemporary folklore at Pendleton University. Unfortunately someone in the class may be to quick of a study, because all of a sudden students start showing up as corpses killed in one of the many methods listed in class. Is it the ghost of Stanley Hall? Or some other psychotic gone while? Well what ever you do don’t say Bloody Mary five times…

The audio here is great, I even found myself turning it down every now and then after a shockingly loud scary scene. One problem here is the small announce that the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is located as the second track rather then the first, requiring most people to have to switch the audio manually to the second track to get 5.1. (Unless you have one of the few players that do this automatically).

The video is a little soft in places but is otherwise clean. One thing missing here is that this one is not Anamorphic Widescreen, so knock off a point for that.

There are a limited number of extras here including a making of with one deleted scene, and a director’s commentary. It is always interesting to listen to a director’s commentary on this type of film, because they make it sound like they were filming Gone With the Wind instead of a “hack-a-thon” film.

All and all this is a popcorn film that is fun to watch on a dark scary night maybe alone with some one to snuggle with, try not to read anymore than that into it. Oh by the way did you hear the one about the DVD critic that wrote one to many horror film reviews, now that is one scary Urban Legend.
