Thank you everyone that pointed out what the term DivX is now being used for.

For those that remain uninformed try this-

http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2568590,00.html

So now the question -

What do we think of this new DivX codex?

Well, um you see, copying movies to YOUR hard drive, from YOUR legally obtained DVD is not not illegal. Trading it with someone else - IS!

Steve over at DVD Resource puts it very well, and we tend to agree. There is no reason to do this with movies if they are -

1. Made generally available in a timely manner.

2. Offered at an affordable price.

That being said, we can only now hope that the studios are listening and change there ways. What would help stop the spread of DivX?

1. End Regional coding.

2. Get rid of Macrovision.

3. Push DVD prices to <$10 each.

4. Always release DVD's day and date with VHS.

4. Keep rentals cheap.

It is our humble opinion that no one in there right mind would spend hours, encoding, uploading and downloading. Just to watch a movie that they could get for less then 10 bucks.

As always we welcome your opinions and you can send them to us at divxfeedback@yanman.com and we will for now create a DivX message board at our discussions page as long as it does not become a legality issue.

Thanks

Yanman and friends.

Oh Yeah and for those that don't know the defunct Divx - Here is our old page.

June 16, 1999 -DIVX DIES - See our DVD News page for more!

Don't have any idea what DIVX was? Good go out and buy a DVD player, and forget the whole thing it's dead now anyway!. But if you really want to know what it is do some research at their web site (sorry even it is gone now), but don't believe everything you read and then come back here for the real scoop.

Well no matter how much this and other sites fought it, DIVX (pronounced divics - like the car civic) has rolled out nationally. And no amount of letters to the founders of this company can stop this now. WE DID WIN IN THE END THOUGH

So I have removed the comment feature from this web site for a number of reasons:

  1. The nation wide roll out has been completed.
  2. A number of people were using this site as a pro-divx soapbox.
  3. Some people never grow up ("Divx sucks man" is not a valid reason to not buy a video format!)
  4. It took up way too much space with little value in return.
  5. There are a number of larger sites dedicated to this mission. (See Anti-Divx links to the right.)

So I've decided to list our position on Divx and to provide a e-mail box for comments. If any of these Anti-Divx comments are good enough we will post them on our Anti-Divx comment of the month page. (Any Pro-Divx e-mails will be read and then promptly deleted. We have heard all the reasons why some people like this poorly thought out format and we still disagree. We own the site so our opinion is the one that counts, don't like it? Leave!)

Top 10 Reason DIVX should fail.

We are not going to explain these points her as they are explained in detail at the sites listed to the right, these are just the points that we agree with.

  1. Higher player cost because of additional hardware.
  2. Higher per viewing cost
  3. Divx offers no benefit to the consumer over open DVD. Why pay more?
  4. Not all studios support DIVX, and some have stated that they never will (Warner, Sony, etc.). All major studios now support DVD.
  5. Proprietary system requires players to call into one number and one number only, if they change the prices or want to discontinue your ability to view it, your stuck. BOY WAS THIS EVER TRUE !
  6. Not ecologically friendly (buy it toss it). Why would anyone keep a $5 disc they never want to see again? With DVD rental you Take it back to the store.
  7. Big brother factor. They have your credit card number and they know what your watching. Can target marketing be far behind?
  8. Limited or no extras. (Why not just stick with VHS?)
  9. Most are Pan&Scan only. (Ditto)
  10. If (Really when) DIVX fails, all your discs become obsolete. BOY WAS THIS EVER TRUE !
